he World Economic Forum’s data on the future of work

The World Economic Forum’s data on the future of work In an effort to predict the economy of future, the World Economic Forum looked at the past. They studied job growth from 1980 to 2012 to see what sectors saw job growth and which sectors saw job declines. The research found a correlation for positions that combined two key skills: mathematics and soft skills. Positions that require both saw the most job growth, whereas positions that require neither saw the most job loss. What’s worth noting here is to fully understand what soft skills really means. Yes, soft skills means being able to collaborate with people and being able to manage, skills that have always been important in the world of work. But it also means having a strong business sense. Yes, it’s one thing to have the ability to solve problems analytically, aka have strong math skills. But it’s another to know what problems to solve that’ll have the most impact on the business. A perfect exam...

Tips on becoming a great (good) manager and entrepreneur

1. Start dressing like a leader The reality is, if you don’t dress like a leader, it’s only going to hamper your ability to lead. So how does a leader dress? It varies from organization to organization. Look around and see how other leaders dress at your organization and follow suit, Dewett said. Quick word of advice – don’t dramatically change the way you dress overnight, as that’s going to be seen as inauthentic (this rule mostly applies if you’ve been promoted from within the same organization), Dewett said. Instead, slowly move closer to the organization’s norm. 2. Develop professional relationships with your staff, not friendships Your goal as a boss should not be to make friends with your employees. The reason is friendships often prevent tough feedback and there’s no performance component to a friendship, whereas performance is your biggest concern as a new manager. Instead, you want to form strong professional relationships ...

3 things to do to make a first intelligent and emotional impression

The best leaders are emotionally intelligent, as emotional intelligence allows them to effectively influence, connect, engage and inspire others. The problem is many of us lack emotional intelligence, or EQ. But the good news is that can change, leadership coach Sara Canaday said in her LinkedIn Learning course,  Transition from Manager to Leader. “While your IQ remains relatively stable, you can actually increase your EQ,” Canaday said in her course. “That means you can take action right now to help expand these leadership-boosting skills.” But before you can improve your emotional intelligence, you need to understand what it is. Canaday said emotionally intelligent people are really good at these five things: They understand their own emotions, and how those affect their decisions and behaviors. They know how to read others, and how to respond in a way that recognizes their needs and concerns. They are nonjudgmental listeners who go out of thei...

Buhari _ the height if hypocrisy

Image
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described President Muhammadu Buhari's involvement in the meeting with President Yahya Jammeh to persuade him to concede defeat as an aberration. The governor said: “A man like Buhari under whose free, fair and credible elections no longer exist lacks moral rights to preach obedience to democratic principles to anyone." He said great Africans like former President Goodluck Jonathan, President John Mahama of Ghana and others who have lost elections and conceded defeat were in the best position to intervene in Gambia and not someone like Buhari, who lost election three times and never conceded defeat. According to his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose wondered what President Buhari, whose government is desperately moving Nigeria from a multi-party democracy to a one party State, would have told President Jammeh in Gambia yesterday, Governor Fayose asked; "Did President Bu...

How to make a good first impression...

When the first humans roamed this earth, they were mostly non-verbal creatures, with no shared language. Therefore, they had to make quick judgments of strangers based solely off the stranger’s body language, to conclude if they were friend or foe. All these years later, despite the advent of language, those instincts have not left us. Science bears that out,  as studies have found  a person will make a decision of a stranger within seven seconds, based off their body language. Think about the business implications of that. Within seven seconds of meeting someone, a person will conclude if you are confident or weak, interested or aloof, friend or foe – based solely off your body language. Obviously, that’s going to directly affect your ability to get leadership buy-in, close a sale or just make a friend. So what should you do in those seven seconds to make a good impression? Body language expert  Carol Kinsey Goman , in a  course in the Lynda lib...
