Apple Secures Permit to Test Autonomous Vehicles in California

Image
Apple secured a permit for autonomous-vehicle testing in California. The permit, awarded by California’s Department of Motor Vehicles, allows Apple to test self-driving cars on public roads in the largest state, adding it to a list of other companies with permits that includes Alphabet’s Google and Tesla. An Apple spokesman declined to comment on the permit and referred to a December statement that said the company is investing machine learning and autonomous systems. The Apple permit covers three 2015 Lexus sport-utility vehicles, which would be retrofitted with hardware and software to be used in autonomous mode. It also covers six human operators who must sit behind the wheel to monitor the driving and take over when needed, according to the DMV.

smart phone that can determine level of male fertility 98% accuracy

Image
A new smartphone attachment can evaluate a man's semen and determine his level of fertility with up to 98% accuracy, a new study has showed. The new technology -- consisting of an external accessory in which sperm samples are inserted and an app that analyzes them -- could make testing as straightforward as a home pregnancy test, the scientists say. More than 45 million couples were estimated to be infertile globally in 2010, about 15% of all couples worldwide. Men are estimated to be solely responsible for up to 30% and to contribute to up to 50% of cases overall, according to one study. The new technology is still a few years away, but the team behind it hopes this new form of testing will make infertility testing both easier and cheaper for men, avoiding the need for them to go to a clinic.   fertility is a big problem. ... Men are embarrassed to go to their urologist for infertility testing," said Dr. Hadi Shafiee, assistant professor of medicine at Brigham ...

facebook stories, and How to make a story

Image
Last week, Facebook users around the world were greeted with a mysterious change. There, atop the usual news feed, was a row of circles. Inside each circle, a photo of one of their friends.hoWhat in the world is happening , cried out millions of people over 30 who have never used Snapchat. It's a new Facebook feature called Stories, and it's an imitation of a popular feature on rival app Snapchat ( SNAP ). A Story is a collection of videos and photos from the past day. It is separate from the photos and videos you share in your newsfeed. You start with one item -- say, a shot of a good dog you met on the way to wo...

Rep to increase jail time of financial crimes to 20 years

Financial Crimes The House of Representatives wants persons convicted of economic and financial crimes to be jailed for 20 years. This is part of the details of the new amendments to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act, 2004, which The PUNCH obtained on Sunday. The Act currently prescribes a penalty of “not less than two years” for economic and financial crimes. Lawmakers consider this to be “lenient” for the serious crime of stealing public money or other forms of financial crimes. Four consolidated bills before the House are seeking to further empower the EFCC to fight crime, insulate the anti-graft agency from interference by the Presidency and enhance its financial autonomy. One of the bills, which was sponsored by a member from Cross River State, Mr. Bassey Ewa, proposes to raise the two-year term for economic and financial crimes offenders to 20 years. In the new bill, Section 18 of the Principal Act is amended to prescribe tougher punis...
