Cyber Attacks takes computers hostage around the world (wanna cry)

Worldwide cyberattack: Here's how to protect yourself By Selena Larson May 15, 2017: 9:09 AM ET One of the biggest-ever ransomware attacks continues to take computers hostage. Friday's attack largely hit businesses and large organizations: U.K. hospitals, a Spanish telecom, FedEx ( FDX ), the Russian Interior Ministry, and more. And it's expected to cause more problems on Monday. Researchers recorded infections in tens of thousands of machines, and  Europol estimated Sunday  that the attack had spread to about 150 countries. Ransomware is  a type of malicious software that takes over a computer and locks the user out, preventing them from accessing any files until they pay money. This particular program, called WannaCry, asks for about $300, though the price increases over time. Experts are advising infected users  not to pay the ransom , because it is unlikely they will get their files back. Businesses and large organizations are mostly at risk of th...

NIGERIAN CURRENCY PROBLEM CALLED "CRAZY"

International  + Nigeria's cash problem: Multiple exchange rates, wild swings and dollar shortages By Eleni Giokos May 2, 2017: 5:54 AM ET In Nigeria, it can be hard to know just how much the notes in your wallet are worth. The official exchange rate for the country's currency, the naira, is around 305 to the dollar. But banks lend to each other at a second rate. A third rate is used by international money transfer companies. Perhaps the most important rate is the one found on the black market (currently 380). The result is currency confusion: The central bank even maintains separate rates for religious pilgrims who need dollars for trips to Mecca, Rome or Jerusalem. The naira faces problems that extend far beyond the trouble caused by multiple rates, however. Here's a look at the struggling currency: Oil money Collapsing oil prices have heaped pressure on the naira. The country's central bank maintained a peg of roughly 200 against the dollar until June of l...

HOW TO DEFUSE NORTH KOREA _Helprin

Image
North Korea has embarked at breakneck speed upon a slipshod effort to field land-, mobile-, and submarine-based ICBMs with nuclear warheads. Unlike the eight other nuclear powers, North Korea’s doctrine resides unknowingly and capriciously in the mind of one man. All nuclear doctrines are different, but most never go beyond the conditional when treating their arsenals as instruments of deterrence. North Korea, however, issues an unrelenting stream of histrionic threats that comport with its recklessness in the shelling of South Korea and sinking of one of its warships, the kidnapping of Japanese citizens in Japan, assassinations abroad, executions and Stalinist gulags at home, criminal sources of revenue, proliferation of missilery, and, tellingly, its perpetual war footing. The totality of its declarations, behavior, and accelerating nuclear trajectory cannot be ignored. Nuclear weapons alone radically change the calculus of any strategic problem. Given the complexity and fragi...

Co-president of Fox News resigns

Image
In the latest shake-up at Fox News, Bill Shine, the co-president of the network and one of its longest-serving executives, has resigned. Shine will depart in the next several weeks after helping with a transition, the network said in a statement, which also announced a management restructuring. Shine is the most recent casualty of the scandals that have already claimed former chairman and chief executive Roger Ailes and top on-air personality Bill O’Reilly. “Bill has played a huge role in building Fox news to its present position as the nation’s biggest and most important cable channel in the history of our industry. His contribution to our channel and our country will resonate for many years.” Rupert Murdoch, executive chairman of 21st Century Fox and chief executive of Fox News Shine and Jack Abernethy were promoted to co-presidents of the news network last year after the departure of Ailes, who resigned amid allegations he sexually harassed multiple wom...
